Beer Soda Bread

Don't use green beer in this. A robust stout, beer or ale will lend a hearty jolt. Serve with a piping hot plate of Irish stew.

Recipe Ingredients

2 cups 125g / 4.4ozWhole-wheat flour
1 cup 62g / 2.2ozUnbleached flour
6 tablespoons 90mlBrown sugar - (packed)
1/2 teaspoon 2.5mlGround cinnamon
1 teaspoon 5mlBaking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons 12mlBaking powder
1 teaspoon 5mlSalt
1 tablespoon 15mlCaraway seeds
1   Egg
1/4 cup 49g / 1.7ozButter - (1/2 stick) - melted
1 1/2 cups 355mlBeer
3/4 cup 120g / 4.2ozRaisins
2 tablespoons 30mlNatural bran or oatmeal - for garnish

Recipe Instructions

Plump raisins in water for 5 minutes, drain.

Stir together whole-wheat and unbleached flours, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and caraway seeds. Make well in center and stir in egg and butter. Stir in beer. Stir by hand to make soft batter. Stir in raisins.

Spoon into greased 9-inch round cake pan. Sprinkle with bran or oatmeal. Bake at 375 degrees until top is dry to touch, 40 to 45 minutes. Top will be slightly cracked. Remove from oven and cool before serving.

This recipe yields 6 servings.

Each servings: 416 calories; 668 mg sodium; 56 mg cholesterol; 10 grams fat; 73 grams carbohydrates; 10 grams protein; 1.30 grams fiber.
